- Kajal’s big break in Tollywood was through the period piece ‘Magadheera’, starring Ram Charan Teja. Kajal played dual roles in the big-budget project by SS Rajamouli which went on to become a blockbuster. Soon, the actress was among the A-list heroines in the Telugu industry, a position she has continued to keep.
- In Kollywood, Kajal’s early films were ‘Pazhani’, ‘Bommalattam’ and ‘Saroja’, none of which did much for her career. In 2010, she was cast as leading lady in the Karthi-starrer ‘Naan Mahaan Alla’ and that marked her arrival as a top heroine in the Tamil industry as well.
- In Telugu, Kajal continued to enjoy success in films such as Prabhas starrers ‘Darling’ and ‘Mr Perfect’. ‘Brindaavanam’ won her a best actress award.
- In 2011, Kajal returned to Bollywood in the cop story ‘Singham’ starring Ajay Devgn in the title role. It was a hero-centric film, but Kajal got noticed for her performance.
- In fact, Kajal wasn’t at all deterred by the fact that many of the South films were hero-centric. In Mahesh Babu’s 2012 film ‘Businessman’, too, she had a limited role, but rode the success wave, thanks to the film becoming a super hit.
- In 2012 Kajal had another big hit in ‘Thuppakki’, in which she played Vijay’s romantic interest. The Diwali release was the first Kollywood film to enter the Rs 100 crore-club.
- Kajal also starred in Suriya’s Diwali 2012 release ‘Maattrran’. The film didn’t fare as expected, but Kajal’s star status was intact.
